Test Scenarios

High-level descriptions of features and user journeys to test, before writing detailed test cases.

Initial notes

Start with these short notes and examples. This guide will be expanded over time.

What are Test Scenarios?

Test Scenarios are high-level descriptions of what to test. They represent a feature, a user journey or a condition that needs coverage.

Scenarios are broader than test cases. A scenario can lead to several detailed cases covering successful actions, invalid inputs, permissions and other relevant conditions.

Example · CRM support ticket journey

Scenario: Validate the customer support ticket creation and resolution process.

Follow the journey from a new support request to a closed ticket:

  1. Create a new support ticket.
  2. Assign it to a support agent.
  3. Update the ticket status as work progresses.
  4. Resolve and close the ticket.

From one scenario to several test cases

Break the support journey into specific checks, each with its own data, steps and expected result:

  • Create a ticket with valid required details.
  • Check validation when a required field is missing.
  • Assign a ticket to an authorised support agent.
  • Verify permitted status transitions.
  • Resolve and close a ticket, then verify that its final status is saved.
